In the 1980s, most CAD programs were expensive or had limited graphics and functionality, but AutoCAD’s ease of use, powerful features and its broad market appeal were an early driver for the mainstream acceptance of CAD and computer-aided design (CAD) techniques.
AutoCAD began as an internal design tool for the aerospace and defense industry, but it soon became widely adopted in industry as a way to streamline design and documentation processes.
AutoCAD was first introduced as Drafting Assistant in 1982 by Autodesk, originally as a personal tool on a 286-based Macintosh Plus in a NeXT workstation. It shipped with only the drawings, but the Mac was not sufficiently powerful to allow AutoCAD to load drawing objects and open them in a 2D window.
Autodesk, using a compact Flash interface, added features to its drafting software over the years, with its first major release, AutoCAD 2.0, in 1988. Although it was a great step forward, the program was still somewhat slow in handling drawing objects and was mainly useful for handling simple drawings and exporting them to EPS or PDF format.
AutoCAD 2.1 was released in 1990, and introduced AutoCAD’s first screen-independent object-modeling capabilities. It marked the transition from simply handling drawings to a full-blown drawing package. It also introduced an Object Database which would allow users to attach (link) drawings together and find them later. AutoCAD 2.2 and AutoCAD 2.3 were released in 1991, and AutoCAD 2.4 came out in 1992.
AutoCAD 2.5 was the first major release that introduced command line interfaces for all of its features. These allowed users to automate the task of entering commands for common functions, speeding up the design process. AutoCAD 2.5 introduced tools for 3D modeling and rendering of objects and 2D and 3D drawing. It also introduced a curved spline modeler and shape control tools, allowing the user to easily create, edit and cut curved surfaces.
AutoCAD 2.6 was the first major release to follow the graphical user interface (GUI) standard introduced with Windows 3.1. It introduced a menu system that replaced the menu bar and toolbar.

AutoLISP is a graphical, object-oriented, language extension to Visual LISP, which is similar to Visual Basic and ObjectARX. Like Visual Basic, AutoLISP is interpreted, so it does not require a computer. However, like Visual LISP, AutoLISP is a procedural language, and functions and variables can be assigned to the graphical toolbars.
AutoLISP scripts are able to control the drawing components, and change the data values and properties of these objects. It is also possible to determine when events occur, such as when the user presses a command button or when data values change. It is possible to access the “on-screen display” of a point, line, circle, arc, text, image, block, label, option menu, hot spot or tag using the AutoLISP API.
