AutoCAD was developed in 1982 by Bruce Farcas, then a computer consultant and engineer at Xerox PARC in Palo Alto, California. He had become interested in computer graphics, and wanted to have a graphics system for his office at home that he could use to design mechanical parts. He approached other members of PARC with the idea, and the CAD/Graphics System (CGS) project was born.
Farcas put together a hardware prototype, and in early 1982 was given funding and resources from Xerox PARC to develop the CGS software application. It was the first application at PARC to be developed using a new programming language, Smalltalk. The PARC staff set to work on the first version of CGS. The first public version of CGS was released on June 22, 1983.
Farcas then handed off responsibility for the project to Kynan Frearson, one of his co-workers at PARC, who had acquired a personal computer for his own use in January 1982. Frearson was the only PARC employee on the project.
For the first version of CGS, the language of choice was a dialect of LISP called the Functional Language Assembly (FLA). Frearson also decided to use the new object-oriented features of the LISP-family languages as part of the CGS development. This helped make CGS a lot easier to learn.
In the fall of 1983, John Seely Brown joined the team at PARC. He had worked on the CGS project and had seen the software while it was still in its early stages. He also joined the team and worked with Frearson and Farcas to make CGS more suitable for office use.
Recognizing that a commercial version of CGS could be very useful, the team took the software through what came to be known as the “demo phase”. Frearson set up a demo room at PARC.
A number of PARC developers attended a CAD conference in San Francisco at the end of December 1983, which focused on the future of CAD applications. These developers, including Farcas, Frearson, and Bill Seaman from Autodesk, became convinced that a commercial version of CGS would be a valuable and profitable product. Farcas was the main CAD expert, so they turned to him for guidance.

A major issue with the technical drawings and schematics for a specific project is that they may be bound to a specific project. To produce a template that can be used for multiple projects, a technical representation that is appropriate for all projects is necessary. One of the core concepts of BIM is to be able to represent all aspects of the project in one drawing to allow for better management and organization of project information. This means that a drawing is the template that is used to make all drawings and schematics for a project. Pro/ENGINEER contains an advanced feature set to allow for the representation of all aspects of the project, including MEP systems, mechanical systems, electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC, etc.
The product can be used as a project management tool by saving all information to the drawing that is used as a template. This includes notes, sheets, dimension rules and other information that is used in multiple sheets and drawings.
The drawing also contains the concept of shared blocks. A block can be used by multiple sheets in the drawing and can have references to a template that is being used for a sheet. The template is itself represented in the drawing as an element. A “dynamic block” allows the user to create different representations of the same type of block, and access the details of that block based on the component selected. The creation of the block is independent of what version of the block is being used.

Altium Designer was one of the first (and most popular) BIM and MEP software to be released, released on March 31, 2003. It is now owned by Autodesk.

A drawing of a mechanical or electrical part is often bound to a particular project. To be able to use the part in multiple projects, the part should be represented in the drawing in a generalized manner. Generalized sheet metal drawing (GSMD) allows the user to create a sheet that contains all information of the part, including component selection, shapes and properties. When the part is used in multiple drawings, the template sheet allows the user to reuse the part in all drawings.
User must define one or more shapes and properties in the template. Multiple shapes and properties can be defined in the drawing. When a sheet is created from the drawing, the properties of the defined shapes in the template sheet are reflected
